In this study, biogenic Mn(IV) oxide was applied to remove Ra from mine water collected from a U mill tailings pond in the Ningyo-toge center. Just 7.6 mg of biogenic Mn(IV) oxide removed more than 98% of the Ra from 3 L of mine water, corresponding to a distribution coefficient of 10 mL/g for Ra at pH 7. The obtained value was convincingly high for practical application of biogenic Mn(IV) oxide in water treatment.

Glove-box gloves, that are used for handling nuclear fuel materials at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, have an expiration date by internal rules. All gloves are replaced at a maximum of every 4-year. However, degrees of glove deterioration varies depending on its usage environment such as frequency, chemicals, and radiation dose. Therefore, physical properties such as tensile strength, elongation, hardness of gloves are measured and technical evaluation method for the glove life-time is established. It was found that gloves without any defects in its appearance have enough physical properties and satisfies the acceptance criteria values of new gloves. Thus, it was considered that the expired gloves could be used for total of 8-year, by adding 4-year of new glove life-time. In addition, the results of extrapolation by plotting the glove's physical properties versus the used years showed that the physical properties at 8-year is on the safer side than the reported physical properties of broken glove. Also, the data are not significantly different from the physical properties of the long-term storage glove (8 and 23 years). Based on these results, life-time of gloves at TRP is set to be 8-year. The frequency of glove inspections are not changed, and if any defects is found, the glove is promptly replaced. Thus, the risk related to glove usage is not increased. The cost of purchasing gloves, labor for glove replacement, and the amount of generated waste can be reduced by approximately 40%, respectively, resulting in more efficient and rationalized glove management.

Using supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we solve the scattering problem of magnons on top of the domain wall and obtain the exact solutions of propagating and bound magnon modes. Then, we find their properties of reflection and refraction in the Skyrmion-textured domain wall, where magnons experience an emergent magnetic field due to its non-trivial spin texture-induced effective gauge field. Finally, we show that the thermal transport decreases as the domain wall's chirality increases. Our results suggest that the thermal transport of an antiferromagnet is tunable by modulating the Skyrmion charge density of the domain wall.

This quantum phenomenon, called the Casimir effect, has been attracting much attention beyond the hierarchy of energy scales, whereas its application to spintronics has not yet been investigated enough, particularly to ferrimagnetic thin films. Here we fill this gap. Using the lattice field theory, we investigate the Casimir effect induced by quantum fields for magnons and find that the magnonic Casimir effect can arise not only in antiferromagnets but also in ferrimagnets (e.g., YIG). Thus, we pave the way for magnonic Casimir engineering.

We present a direct connection between band topology and the torques by classifying the whole torques phenomenologically. As well as the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, the torques also emerge intrinsically from the anomalous velocity of electrons regardless of a nonequilibrium transport current. We especially point out the intrinsic contribution arising exclusively in magnetic textures, which we call the "topological Hall torque (THT)". The THT emerges in bulk crystals without any interface or surface structures. We numerically demonstrate the enhancement of the THT in comparison with the conventional spin-transfer torque in the bulk metallic ferromagnet, which accounts for the giant current-induced torque measured in ferromagnetic .

The BMOs readily oxidized exogenous Mn to produce another BMO phase, and subsequently sequestered Ba at a pH of 7.0, with irreversible Ba sequestration as the dominant pathway. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses demonstrated alteration from turbostratic to tightly stacked birnessite through possible Ba incorporation into the interlayer.

Recently, a research group studying at Plutonium Fuel Development Facility (PFDF) in Japan Atomic Energy Agency has systematically measured vast amounts of physical properties in the non-stoichiometric (U, Pu)O. Lattice parameter, elastic modulus, thermal expansion, oxygen potential, oxygen chemical diffusion coefficient and thermal conductivity were successfully measured as function of Pu content, O/M ratio and temperature, and the effects of Pu content and O/M ratio on their physical properties were evaluated. In this work, those experimental data are reviewed, and latest experimental data set on the non-stoichiometric (U, Pu)O are presented. The data set would be available in development of a fuel performance code.

The relationship between oxygen partial pressure and deviation in (U,Pu)O was analyzed, and equilibrium constants of defect formation were determined as functions of Pu content and temperature. Brouwer's diagrams were constructed using the determined equilibrium constants, and a relational equation to determine O/M ratio was derived as functions of O/M ratio, Pu content and temperature. In addition, relationship between oxygen potential and oxygen diffusion coefficients were described.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting R&D activities at the off-site URL at Horonobe, Hokkaido, Japan in order to enhance reliability of technology related to deep geological disposal of HLW in sedimentary rocks. In this report, strength properties (cohesion and frictional angle) of rock masses in the Koetoi and Wakkanai formations are investigated on the basis of triaxial tests conducted in the Horonobe URL considering the relative depths to the formation. Strength properties investigated in this report are compared with the properties obtained in the designing phase. The cohesion in the Koetoi Formation increased with increasing depth. On the other hand, in the transition zone of the Wakkanai Formation, the cohesion increased significantly in the shallow Wakkanai formation (transition zone). Below the transition zone, the cohesion does not significantly depend on the depth. Thus the strength properties between two formations were found to be different. Comparing the cohesions and frictional angles determined from triaxial tests with the values determined in the designing phase, there was no agreement between these values in almost all the depth. Thus it is essential to determine cohesion and frictional angle considering the relative depths to the formation for detailed understanding of strength properties of rock mass.

The -dependence of the internal field at the Ga site has been determined and is found to coincide with that of the spontaneous magnetization. The electric field gradient (EFG) and transferred hyperfine coupling constant at the Ga site are found to be modified in the ferromagnetically ordered state, presumably due to a modification of the electronic state caused by the ferromagnetic ordering. The spin-lattice relaxation rate is enhanced due to ferromagnetic fluctuations around . The 5 magnetic moments are considered to be nearly localized in UGa, in spite of good metallic conduction.

The measurement condition by spectrophotometry was evaluated to measure Np content in MOX fuel containing Np. The Np concentration was obtained by measuring the 727nm absorption peak, after the valence of Np in the sample solution was adjusted to the Np(Ⅳ). The calibration curve showed the linearity up to Np concentration 0.8mg/ml. Though Pu and U quantity were respectively added to the Np solution to 30 times and 60 times of Np concentration, there was no effect to the Np analysis. By using this method, relative standard deviation (RSD) of the analyzed values of Np content for 2%Np - MOX fuel was about 4%. In addition, It was confirmed that the Np content could be measured without separating Np from Pu and U. This method can be sufficiently applied as a quick simple method to analyze Np content in MOX fuel containing Np.
